Dongeng Kerajaan (eng: Royal Tales) was a project I did for Dar! Mizan, a mayor publisher in Indonesia. The book consists of three collection of tales with different setting places and characters. The first story is about a greedy king who doesn’t care about his people, the second story is about a queen who has many desires until she’s overwhelmed by her own desires, and the last story is about a shy princess who doesn’t know how to interact with other people.
What made me very interested in illustrating this storybook was because it had Indonesian cultures as the theme. There are so many cultures in Indonesia that I, who am an Indonesian, also need to do research to add more refferences to illustrate this story.
Sketches
My task as an illustrator was to fill the book with different illustration layout, full spread but not all spread in 100% color. Leaving the white space allowed to create diverse compositions and made each double-page spread unique. While the teks layout was done by publishing team. Here are some illustrations from the book.
